Fibreglass Pipes Sea Container Re-Pack

Axis Packaging were contracted to re-pack 12 non-complaint sea containers of fibreglass pipes for transport to the Barrow Island Gorgon Gas Project. The sea containers were very tightly packed which presented challenges in term of Occupational Health & Safety.

Client Requirements

  • To re-pack 12 sea freight containers of fibreglass pipes.
  • To carry out the re-pack on-site in preparation for sea transport.
  • The re-pack must be sea freight compliant.

Our Challenges

  • The fibreglass pipes arrived in 12 very tightly packed sea containers. The limited space between the pipes and the roof of the container posed Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risks for working with equipment (eg. nail gun) in a confined space.
  • The metal containers and limited space also posed OHS risks in terms of potentially high temperatures occurring inside the containers.
  • The different male and female ends and varying diameter of the pipes, required different bracing
    at each end of the containers.

 

Our Solution

  • Prior to working on the re-pack, staff attended Occupational Health and Safety courses for working with equipment in confined spaces and for patient recovery in the event of heat stroke.
  • Work was scheduled around temperature forecasts to prevent staff working in potentially high temperatures inside the containers.
  • Regular breaks were taken by staff working in the containers to prevent heat stroke.
  • An internal dunnage framework was placed inside the sea containers before the pipes were re-packed, and then the final dunnage and end bracing were fitted.
  • Although the pipes arrived in 12 sea containers, they were re-packed into 16 containers to ensure the same OHS issues associated with limited space did not occur when unpacking at the Barrow Island Gorgon Gas Project.
